Film Genres

                                         Film Genres

Action.
Action films usually include high energy, physical stunts and chases, possibly with rescues, battles, fights, escapes, non-stop motion, spectacular rhythm and pacing, and adventurous, often two-dimensional 'good-guy' heroes or recently heroines, that fight the 'bad guys'.

A couple of examples of recent action films are;



SKYFALL (2012)- one of the many James Bond movies that includes fights, non-stop motion, a hero (James Bond) that fights the bad guys and a few physical stunts.










TRANSFORMERS(2007) - an action/science fiction movie that includes two Cybertronian races, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons that come to Earth because of a normal teenager that has the 'ultimate power'. It includes chases, fights, adventure and high energy throughout.








Adventure.
Adventure films are usually exciting stories, with new experiences in exotic places which include searches or expeditions in jungles or deserts, treasure hunts, disaster films, or searches for the unknown.

A couple of recent adventure films are;





PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003) - a movie about a pirate called jack sparrow, who goes on a search for Will Turners loved one from the pirate allies, who are the undead.










THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN (2011) - Although this is a animated movie, the adventures of Tintin follows a hunt for the pieces of paper that hold the secret of the unicorn and on the way they meet the allies that are the other family also searching for the secret.






Comedy.
Comedies are light hearted plots that are designed to amuse and entertain by exaggerating the situation in the language, action, relationships and characters.

A couple of recent comedy films are;





CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE (2011) - This movie involves all the characters liking or knowing one of the other characters that are involved in the film and at the end they all realise that they know each other. Through the movie there are one liners, awkward moments in relationships and characters fighting with each other that makes the movie even funnier.








THE HANGOVER (2009) - Three friends wake up from a bachelor party in Las Vegas, with no memory of the previous night and the bachelor missing. They make their way around the city in order to find their friend before his wedding.






Romance
Romantic films are designed that focus on passion, emotion and the affectionate romantic involvement of the main characters and the journey that their genuinely strong, true and pure romantic love takes them.

A couple of recent romance films are;



Notting Hill (1999) - The life of a simple bookshop owner changes when he meets the most famous film star in the world.










Love Actually (2003) - Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely and interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.





Horror.
Horror films are designed to frighten and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying, shocking finale, while entertaining us at the same time. Horror films feature a wide range of styles, from the earliest silent Nosferatu classic, to today's CGI monsters and deranged humans.

A couple of recent horror films are;






THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (2012) - Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods.











INSIDIOUS (2010) - A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.







Musical.
Musical films are cinematic forms that emphasize full-scale scores or song and dance routines in a significant way, usually with a musical or dance performance integrated as part of the film narrative, or they are films that are centered on combinations of music, dance, song or choreography.

A couple of musical films are;






HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL (2006) - Troy and Gabriella - two teens who are worlds apart - meet at a karaoke contest and discover their mutual love for music. With music and dance performances throughout as well as teen romance.









HAIRSPRAY (2007) - Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show which includes music and dance performances and teen love.







Science fiction.
Sci-fi films are often semi-scientific, visionary and imaginative, complete with heroes, aliens, distant planets, impossible quests, improbable settings, fantastic places, great dark and shadowy villains, futuristic technology, unknown and unknowable forces, and extraordinary monsters.

A couple of science fiction films are;





AVATAR (2009) - A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home. This movie includes distant planets, extraordinary monsters and futuristic technology.









STAR TREK (2009) - The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful, time-traveling Romulan creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time. This movie includes distant plants, improbable settings and futuristic technology.
