Analysis of The Haunting in Connectitcut, 2009

                          Analysis of The Haunting in Connecticut.

9 Main Shots of the Opening.
 These 9 main shots of the opening all represent key things that happen in the opening of the haunting in Connecticut.
  • The first frame is of the institution 'Lionsgate'. The normal institution that appears in most films looks a lot brighter and gives a happier feel, whereas in this horror film, the institution appears in a red, fire looking animation, that highlights the fact that the genre of this film is definitely going to be horror, as well as creating a dark, spooky atmosphere for the audience.
  • The second frame is of a sepia effected picture of a typical looking family photo. The people within the family have no expressions on their faces and they're standing, or sitting with straight backs, almost ghost like. This would make an unsettling atmosphere for the audience, as they don't understand what the family have to do with the film they are currently watching.
  • The third frame I chose was of what looks like cutlery and metal rods being inserted into some sort of skin. This is a disturbing photo for the audience because it is not a photo that would typically be stereotyped with a haunting, as normally ghosts can't stab people because they can't pick up objects. This would further add to the unsettling atmosphere for the audience.
  • The fourth frame is of another family looking photo, also in the sepia effect, suggesting that this photo is old. The two girls and the boy have blank expressions on their faces and  look depressed in the photo and therefore would make the audience wonder if these people are victims, or whether they don't have much to do with the film at all, they are just added in the beginning to add tension.
  • This fifth frame is of blood dripping or running along a surface. This is another disturbing image for the audience to watch, again symbolising the genre of the film and suggesting to the audience that the film is going to involve blood and gore. This will reveal to the audience what sub-genre of horror this film is going to be involved with.
  • The sixth frame is a photo of two girls, sitting on a bench with plants in the corner. The picture is again in a sepia effect and suggests to the audience that the photo was taken a while ago. The two girls have the same expression on their face that the others people in the photos had, making the audience piece together that the people may have been in a similar, if not the same, situation as each other.
  • The seventh frame is of a man, that looks like he is dead, or has just died. He is non emotional and has his eyes closed, which would make the audience think that he is dead, which would fit well with the horror genre, because in horror films, characters tend to die. The picture is very dark and creates a very sinister feeling and leaves the audience wondering why they are being shown this particular image.
  • The eighth frame is of three cuts on the skin, all deep and the last one being cut at that point, with a sharp metal object. This is another disturbing image for the audience and is very graphic, which would make some of the audience feel sick or look away because it is so realistic.
  • The last frame is of the title. The title is on a black background and makes the title stand out more, as well as getting the audience to focus on one particular part of the screen. The title is in a sepia colour, which fits in with the rest of the opening. This would give a hint to the audience that it could possibly have a part of it is set in the olden days, or has something to do with the past, which would be why it is a film about haunting.

What is 'Suspense'?

                                                     What is 'Suspense'?

Suspense happens in both fiction and non-fiction. It makes the audience uncomfirmed as to what is going to happen next in the film. Suspence can happen at any moment, whether it be the title, the characters body language, the plot or what the character(s) says.

Another way of creating suspense is by what one specific character does or says throught the film, or even in the opening scene, because it makes the audience wary about what that character is going to do. For example, at the beginning of the movie 'It', the clown doesn't say much but by his body language and facial expressions, the audience would be scared as to what Pennywise is going to do throughout the film.

Different Camera Angles

                                             Different Camera Angles.

The Worm Eye View - This is when the camera is pointing upwards. This camera angle is used to show higher status, to make the audience feel inferior, to looking at the buildings or objects in the setting or to directly look at the sky.

Close up - This camera angle is so that the audience can see the characters reaction, the audience can clearly see the features of a character or object or so the audience can see important parts of the movie or characters more defined.

Panning shot - This is where the camera turns but remains in one position. This will establish the setting for the audience or following one of the main character(s).

Birds Eye View - This camera angle is normally taken from a helicopter to establish the setting or a main part of the film. It shows the audience a clear view of the whole setting or when the camera is going from the birds eye view to a close up of what is happening.

Shot, Reverse, Shot - This camera angle shows who is involved with a conversation or what the character can see ( what the character is watching). This is shown by going from one character, to another character in the conversation (what the character can see) and then it goes back to the first character that is seen in the first shot.

Two shot - This camera angle shows two characters in one shot. This can introduce to the audience two of the main characters, how the characters are feeling or can define two characters facial expressions in just one shot.

Low Angle Shot - This camera angle can make the audience feel inferior, can make the character(s) shown in the shot have a high status or can show the importance of the character(s) in the shot. The is shown by the camera being lower than the character(s) or object that is shown.

Mid Shot - This is the camera angle that shows a character from the waist up. This gives the audience a closer view of what is happening and it is a clearer image  in the camera shot, whether it be one or more characters. This photo, on the right, is a great example of a mid shot.

Long shot - This shot helps the establishing shot. It shows the whole costume that the character is wearing as well as the character itself and also it can show the setting around them. It can show whole body for more than one character in one shot.

Tracking shot - This is when the camera follows the action by moving. This makes the audience feel more like they are following the characters rather than just watching them and would make them feel more involved in the film.

Analysis of Resident Evil, 2002

Analysis of Resident Evil, 2002.

After the names of the institutions that are involved have been shown, the beginning of the credits appear and there is a slow, low, whining, non diegetic music, adding to the tension of the atmosphere amongst the audience and it shows the horror genre of the film. This music is only played for a short amount of time as there isn't many credits being shown in the opening. The music adds to the atmosphere because it is very spooky and hasn't got a very fast tempo. The credits are shown in white and the background is black, enhancing the writing, making it easier for the audience to read. The dark background adds the effect of a gloomy, dark plot that could occur during the film.

The music then stops and a red octagon, split into eight sections, comes up with a black background behind. The black background makes the octagon stand out more and makes the audience focus on what the octagon is going to do. The octagon makes the audience feel as if they are in a military operation because it is very structured and has a formal layout to it. Then a confidential report comes up and it makes the audience feel more involved with the film because they get to see the confidential report that nobody is supposed to hear or see. There is no music playing, but there is a sound effect that sounds like the sound effect the audience would hear when a spy mission or when a location comes up in a film at the bottom of the screen, increasing the feeling of being part of a military or spy mission.

Then a monotone, male voice starts to read some information about the events that might be background information or information that the audience might need for later on in the film. The information about the events that are being mentioned would make the audience feel more involved in the film because they are finding out more information which might come in hand throughout the rest of the movie. There are objects floating around in the background and every so often there is a slightly high pitched noise that sounds like a computerised noise. This all adds to the effect that the audience could be involved in a operation and it would make them feel even more involved then they previously did. The red colour scheme has a blood representation, making the audience feel a little uneasy of what they were going to see during the film.

After the short information on the events that have been happening, the title of the film appears and moves from one side of the screen to the other, making a statement that it is an important title for the audience to read. The font of the title is very straight and has several pointed ends to the letters, making it look more authoritative and powerful, which works well with the genre of this film. The title of the film is in a white colour, which is on a red and black background that stands out more to the audience. There are still objects floating around in the background, but none of the objects are very relevant at the moment to what is going on in the film, but they might have some relevance later on in the film. The title of the film then starts to fade away into the red background and then the title turns to black and disappears completely. This adds an effect for the audience and makes it more exciting for them to watch.

The music then starts again in a 'du dum dum du' rhythm. This rhythm makes the music sound dangerous and evil, therefore making the atmosphere within the audience build. The object in the distance would confuse the audience because they cannot see it very well at first, therefore they wouldn't know why it has any relevance to the film. The object in the distant adds suspense to the movie, as it is unclear what the object is. As the object starts to get closer, the audience starts to see some movement and it looks like a mechanic arm. This will intrigue the audience because they will want to know what the object in the distance is. As it gets closer, the audience sees what looks like an astronaut or laboratory worker controlling two mechanic arms. This will make the audience become more curious as to what they are watching is about. The black background means that the audience will concentrate more on the object that is coming towards them rather than what is going on in the background, grabbing the their attention, which is what the audience will want.

As the image continues to zoom in, the audience see more of what the laboratory worker is doing and that adds to the intriguing atmosphere for the audience. The room the person is in is very metallic and their surroundings are also very metallic too. This could show that the opening of this movie is set in a lab.The camera then changes to a close up shot of a pincer picking up one of the tubes with something blue coloured inside. There are lots of tubes with the same substance in it surrounding the one that the pincer is picking up which could suggest to the audience that they're making or producing something that could be scientific or have something to do with new technology. This would build the suspense within the audience because as of yet they don't know if the substance is going to be used for good or bad purposes and whether it is dangerous or not. The music is building the tension within the atmosphere throughout, leaving the audience intrigued to find out more.

The pincer then picks up a tube with the same looking tube but this time the substance is of the colour green instead of blue. Then, the camera swaps to a shot with a dark case with a gun like shape with a needle on the end inside. This could show the audience that some testing could be going on which could possibly go wrong for the characters, further more intriguing the audience to watch. The music has gotten more eerie then before, which would build tension for the audience. The people in the white uniforms haven't shown the audience anything to do with their identities which will create suspense within the audience because they don't know who the characters are yet, all the audience can see of them is their body language and what they are currently doing with the substances.

Then, the audience sees the big, dark case being closed and locked, showing that whoever the character is that is involved with the substances doesn't want people to get in without knowing, which could suggest that whatever is in the case could be harmful or important to the character or who they work for. The audience then sees the person, wearing a white suit, taking the case out of the protected cabinet and putting it into a black bag. The audience still does not see the identity of the person, but by their masculine body shape, the character could possibly be a man. The man then has a spare tube in his hand which he throws across the room and it smashes. The camera is following the test tube while it is flying through the air and then smashing, therefore the audience know that this is an important part of the film. While it is smashing, the man is making a quick escape and closing and locking the door behind him. This would increase the tension for the audience and will get them confused as to why he is doing all this and why he has to make a quick escape.

Then the smashed substance's steam goes into the air system and comes out in a non isolated room. This would build a lot of tension because the steam that has come out of the tube could have been dangerous which is why it is in an isolated room and it has been diffused with the non isolated air. Then the audience finally sees some identities and there is an overhead speaker that says that they have to wear their identity badges at all time, which would create a confusion to the audience because they might think, why do they need to wear identity badges? A simpleminded looking man then walks under the air system, which the steam has just come out of and yet we do not see the mysterious man with the black bag again in the opening scene.

Analysis of Sweeney Todd, 2007

                                      Analysis of Sweeney Todd, 2007

As the names of 'Warner Brothers' and 'Dream Works' comes onto the screen, there is non diegetic music playing which resembles a funeral and death. This is because the instrument being used in an organ and the pitch is very high, making the sound of the non diegetic music add suspense. The animations for 'Warner Brothers' and 'Dream Works' aren't in the normal, light and bright colours, but instead they're in a very dark and eerie light. The colour scheme along with the music sets the genre of the film for the audience because they're very stereotypical horror conventions that are used in the majority of horror films.

 The names of famous actresses and actors that are involved in the film appear, the audience see the animation beginning. The animation first seethe tops of the houses, then the camera enters a Barbour shop and they see a single chair. The animation tells the audience about the story line of the film, therefore telling the audience what the film is going to be about. Then as more names appear, the animation shows the audience more disturbing pictures as they start to see blood appearing from the pictures, down the furniture and then on to the work wheels. This adds a sense of death to the audience as the blood represents the blood of the people that may have been killed. The blood will be distressing to some of the audience that would be currently watching, which will show that the genre of the film is definitely horror.

The fast pace of the animation of the blood, as well as the work wheels and the music, which is in a low and a high pitch, adds to the atmosphere because gives a spooky feel for the audience. The title of the film is in red which would represent the blood of the many people that died in the story of Sweeney Todd, which would give an instant connection to the film. The background behind the title is in a dark light, which sets a disturbing mood for the audience. The fact that the background is moving fast downwards would make the audience feel like they are falling down with the blood or the dead bodies. The music is getting louder and more intense, which will get the audience excited and nervous about what is to come.

The unsettling animation of the meat being processed will engage the audience even further because if the audience are aware of the story of Sweeney Todd, they will be freaked out by this picture as well as being eager to know what happens next. The non diegetic music continues to increase in tempo and get louder as the animation continues to play and the meat then turns back into blood. The meat turning back into blood just continues to remind the audience about the story and the death which is involved, therefore making them more and more unsettled. The animation is so life like that it would look more realistic, therefore the audience would feel more disturbed, then if it was more cartoon like.

As the animation continues, the audience see more of the story of Sweeney Todd, as the meat that turned into blood was dripping into a big cauldron looking pot, which was swirling round. Then the audience sees the fire as more credits are shown and the music is still getting faster and more intense. As the animation goes on it would keep the audience looking at what is happening all the time and would make them eager to find out more. The fire quickly turns into the pies with the juices oozing out of it and with the story of Sweeney Todd, would make the audience feel even more disturbed. The fact that the animation is quickly going from one scene to another, would make the audience keep their eyes on the screen in case they missed something important, which would engage the audience further, therefore the director would have completed its purpose.

The juices then start to bubble and the colour turns to red again, reminding the audience of death and blood. The blood the starts to run out the drain of the Barbour's shop at a fast pace, matching the music, which is also really fast and has a mixture between a high and a low pitch. This all makes the tension increase as the audience sees more and more of the story of Sweeney Todd and therefore the audience would get more and more anxious about the film. The rats in this shot shows to the audience that the blood is going into the sewage or water system. The fact that the blood is coming out of the drain would give the audience a disturbing view of the story and would make the audience feel more and more scared of what they are about to watch.

The next disturbing image that is revealed to the audience is of the blood dripping down into the sewer or water and being mixed with the other sewage or water, which would give the audience a sick feeling in their stomach because the picture is quite graphic and looks very realistic. The music continues to play and the tempo stays the same but the pitch is getting higher and the lower pitch is fading slightly. This would increase the tension because the audience is seeing more and more of the story, while the credits are running. The audience is yet to see any of the characters, making the identity of the characters hidden,giving a mysterious feeling for the audience, but they are getting a clear view of what they are going to be seeing throughout the film.

The audience then starts to follow the blood with the water as it goes through the system. The audience gets a clear view of the water and the blood dropping down into the next part of the system, creating an eerie mood for the audience, due to the animation and the music that carries on being disturbing for the audience. The animation is still very fast, keeping in time with the music that is playing, as the blood then starts to blend in with the water. The water gets clearer, which would make the audience think; what if someone then drinks that water? and they would get a disturbing image in their head of what would happen, therefore increasing the dark and spooky atmosphere.

Then the music starts to get quieter as the last credit are shown, which says that the director is Tim Burton, and then the music stops all together, which creates tension in the audience.  The picture goes to a grey colour, which then turns into smoke or clouds and the audience sees a ship appear in the mist. The music then starts again but this time instead of being scary and tense, its slower and creates a less intense atmosphere, as it is the opposite to what the audience have just heard. The audience then sees the ship heading for London because they see the London bridge in front of the ship, which would be making the audience think that Sweeney Todd or his partner maybe in that boat. The lighting is very dark which makes the atmosphere still eerie and gloomy but it is not as tense because there is no longer any blood or disturbing images shown.

Film Openings Research

Film Openings Research.

Pretty Woman.
  •  The genre of this film is romantic comedy.
The conventions used in the opening of this film are;
The opening of this film shows where it is set, as there is a panning of the area and in this panning we see the Hollywood sign. This gives us an indication of what type of man Edward and other characters in the film are because they are living and working in Hollywood.

In the opening, the audience is introduced to some of the main characters and they get a first impression of what the characters are like. Edward is shown as wealthy but arrogant man as he ignores what his lawyer says and takes the car. He comes across as not taking relationships very seriously as he talks to one of his ex-girlfriends about whether she talked to his receptionist more than him when they were going out and she replied with the fact that his receptionist was one of her bridesmaids.

The audience is introduced to Edward's lawyer. He tends to follow Edward where ever he goes and is always by his side or near to Edward in the opening scene. The fact that Edward ignores him suggests that Edward doesn't particularly take his lawyers opinion into consideration and it shows that Edward has a higher status than the lawyer.

The opening of Pretty Woman goes straight into the first scene giving us a glimpse of what life is like for Edward and his companions. Following that are the brief credits that say the institutions and the main actors and actresses that appear in the film. The audience also gets a introduction to the storyline and who might possibly be involved in the film.

At the end of the opening the audience see some prostitutes waiting by the side of the street and talking to the men in the cars which give the audience an indication that the film might involve prostitutes and their business.

Batman - The Dark Knight.

  • The genre of this film is thriller/action.
The conventions used in the opening of the film are;

Right at the start of the film, when the audience sees the names of the institutions, the lighting is very dark to suggest a dark storyline or to show the genre of the film. There isn't much music at the start to build tension in the audience although music sounds as we first see a couple of the clowns in one of the rooms in the skyscraper. The music starts properly after the window of the room in the skyscraper  that the clowns are in smashes. The music builds tension because it repeats the same beats throughout, which gets louder as more instruments come in and then as the clowns kill more of the other clowns and steal and break into things. No faces are shown as the men are wearing clown masks to hide their identity as this adds to the theme of the film.

The opening is quite long and uses action shots and goes right into a scene. At the end of that scene, the audience sees one of the main characters, the Joker, shooting one of the clowns that had survived and then driving off in a school bus. The opening has no titles at all, it just goes straight into the film. The Joker is mentioned by all of the clowns like they are narrating because one clown continues on from the clown had said before.

Final Destination 3.
  • The genre of this film is thriller.
The conventions used in the opening of the film are;

 The music in the credits shows the genre of the film because it is very dark and has scary music. There is also a quiet ticking noise in the credits and the disturbing images of the carousel and other fair ground rides that are shown throughout the credit, which all adds to  the eerie atmosphere and creates tension for the audience. All of the disturbing pictures and noises are involved with the film too. The lighting of the disturbing pictures are very vibrant and the background is very dark which makes the pictures stand out more.

The credits show the names of the institutions involved, directors and the main actors and actresses. The credits are at the same time as the disturbing pictures. At the end of the credits there is a brief scene where the audience gets to see some of the characters that could be involved. This scene also shows one of the characters looking like she knows there is something wrong because she keeps stopping and looking around her with a confused and worried look on her face. The brief scene shows some of the characters on a ride and one of the girls taking and the picture of them. The girl then looks at the picture and is confused about what she sees but the audience don't see what she sees in the picture which builds tension.

Pulp Fiction.
  • The genre for this film is dark comedic crime.
The conventions used in the opening of the film are;

There was a opening scene, before the credits, which is in the coffee shop where the audience was introduced to two characters, a male and a female, who are known as Ringo (Pumpkin) and Yolanda (Honey Bunny). The fact that Ringo swears a lot during this first scene shows the age for the appropriate audience is at least a 12. The scene shows what the two characters want to do, while in this coffee shop, because they explain how they want to rob the shop. The simple coffee shop scene contrasts to what they are talking about because the shop makes them seem very innocent and then when they talk about shop lifting it shows them in a different light. It looks like it has been filmed in broad daylight which contrast with the fact that they are robbing the coffee shop. The use of props, two guns, shows that the two characters are not as innocent as the first seemed when the audience first saw them sitting in a booth in the coffee shop.

After the two characters freeze holding their guns, the music starts to play and is up beat and fast. The credits show the main actors and actresses as well as the names of the institutions involved. The music is a big part of the film and that is why the music director and the team that helped with the music appear in the credits as well.

The Shining.
  • The genre for this film is horror.
The conventions used in the opening of the film are;

The music is a big part of this opening because its starts of low, building tension as the audience see the camera panning the landscape, then the music gets higher and faster, which therefore makes the tension build even more and then finally the music is a mixture of high and low instruments at the end of the opening. The panning of the area shows the setting of the film and the isolation that the characters could possible be in, it shows the weather and how that could be a problem for the characters and it has a sense of gloom and doom. The opening does not introduce any of the characters that are involved which would build the tension because the audience wouldn't know any of the characters. The opening does show a yellow car during the panning of the area which shows that the characters are venturing deeper into isolation because there are no houses or civilisation shown in the panning of the area.

The credits are appearing as the panning of the landscape is being shown. The credits show the names of the institutions, the title of the film and the main actors and actresses that are involved.

Reservoir Dogs.
  • The genre for this film is action.
The conventions used in the film are;

The music in the opening is relevant to the movie theme and it sets the genre of the film. There is little speech in the opening though it is mostly music. The lack of conversation adds atmosphere to the opening scene because the audience doesn't know any background information about the characters or scenario. In the picture shown, shows the title of the film above the main characters. The cars and the houses in the background show that the movie is older and the colour quality also shows the age of the film. The title is in a mustard yellow colour with a black outline to show definition to make the title stand out. It is also in a serif font, which suggests that the film will have a darkened theme and storyline due to the sharpness of the title.

There are shots of the men in black suits walking down the street in slow motion to show the characters personalities and importance of their role in the storyline. As a close up of each character appears on the screen, the actor's name is shown below their headshot to inform the audience of the actors role in the movie. The other credits then appear after,showing they are not as important as the main actors that are involved. The car in the background looks old and discoloured, which makes the characters in the foreground look more important as the stand out in black.
